Seed Starting Report Card

Planted 34 Kiera Kale seedlings.  2 doa in seedling pots.

Planted 9 or so Asian Greens in front of the colored pot row (new soil and peat and pine fines); transplanted from recycled nursery cell tray.

Planted 2 6" pots of Orach Mtn Spinach.  Germination and starting iffy at best; transplanted from starter cups and cell trays.

Soaked the last of the Wando Pea package overnight and planted out all around vertical growing surfaces in the front.

Planted one of the chayote from the garage under the magnolia tree with the other from fall (not too sure if the fall one is alive; looks like it might be)

Took the black 2 gallon nursery pot with the collected from store bought campari tomato seedlings out by the garden heater/electrical box; and gave it a dose of blood meal.  It is setting blooms.

Planted the healthiest seedling Florida Market Eggplant in the ground just south of the electrical box; with a mulch blanket up to its chin.

Planted a Burpee Pickler seedling where I moved out the croton (near the electrical box).  It too is mulched up to its chin.

Planted a Mortgage Lifter Tomato seedling in the green 3.5 gallon bucket and put it out in salad bar row so it can take advantage of the sunlight; and be easily moved in case of inclement weather.

Upsized the grown from Publix Red Bell  Pepper seed  into 4" pots.

Then my neighbor came out and reminded me that February is our traditionally hardest hit freeze months.  Actually, I was thinking of this.  Which is why only a few and all that can be easily protected.

Moved both of the dwarf yellow ixora out of the salad bar.

Hubs and I got the apple tree in the ground today.  We are such proud parents.

Oh, and I think we want one of these:
"4-N-1 LOW CHILL PLUM COMBO

4 of these 5 varieties depending on availability: Beauty, Burgundy, Golden Nectar, Methley, Santa Rosa. Available on: Cit.

CITATION (Cit.)
Peaches and nectarines dwarfed to 8-14 ft.; apricots and plums dwarfed to 12-18 ft. Very tolerant of wet soil; not drought tolerant(induces early dormancy in dry soil) so needs very regular water in hot climates; a top dressing of mulch can help maintain soil moisture. Resists root-knot nematodes. Induces heavy bearing at a young age. Very winter hardy. Strong and well anchored. Pat. No. 5112 (Zaiger)"

From Bay Laurel Nursery.

I have totally failed at starting Orlando Eggplant.  I'm not sure why.  I planted out the last 5 seeds tonight, to replace previous failures.  The two seeds on top the refrigerator in the jiffy pellets haven't sprouted yet.  The 4 pepper plants and the Spicy Globe basil (all in Jiffy Pellets) have all sprouted and are doing okay; the basil is going gang busters.

OK, report card time.

Starting seeds on top paper towel pieces in a starter cup?  Not a good idea - poor grade - C-.

Drainage holes 1" up the side of the cup - FAIL

Pine fines in the bottom of the recycled nursery cell tray?  Not a bad idea; actually worked kind of nice; next time screen the fines - B

Peat cell trays on top the electrical box?  FAIL - dries out too fast.  Regular recycled nursery cell trays on top the electrical box?  WIN A++

Mache, or Corn Salad germination?  FAIL.  I had one seed germinate on a coffee filter and then it withered away.  No others germinated, in 4 different attempted spots.  Maybe I should start earlier next year; definitely too hot now.

Tonight; started in 9 pack cell trays:  Walmart Yellow Marigold seed; Golden Purslane; Fedco Lemon Gem Marigold and Nasturtium Jewel.  Also have 5 pots with ginger root pieces on top the hot water heater.  Oh, and 3 cups of Cherokee Purple Tomato.

Oh, and then I found Seed Sowing Saturday, and just had to join up.  Fun, fun. And I'm quite enjoying reading Dave's blog.

Thanks for joining in! You're getting a good start even if things aren't working out for everything! I wish we could do more outdoors here but we're still facing quite a few days of cold weather here in TN.
